Active8

Children in Year 5 have been taking part in a project entitled Active8, run by the Wiltshire Global Education Centre.  It aims to raise awareness of the 8 UN Millennium Development Goals.  As well as taking part in workshops, some of the children also attended a schools meeting in Calne, where they talked to other children about how to raise awareness in schools and the community. Here is a report written by some of the children who attended.

When Active8 came to Colebrook, we started by talking about how we could be a global citizen.  We learnt about the 8 UN Millennium Development Goals which governments are trying to reach by 2015.  These goals focus on: food and poverty; education for all; equality for girls and women; children and babies; mothers’ health; fighting diseases; environment; working together. We learnt about fair trade and how more shops are selling fair trade goods. We also got the little book of children’s rights and responsibilities.

On May 6th we went to the Lansdown Strand Hotel in Calne where we were first paired up with someone from the other school. We had to do a quiz about things to do with Active8.  Then we looked at some headlines from newspapers, one of which was ‘2.9 million children are falling below the bread line’, and we had to guess which country it was describing.  Amazingly, it was from Great Britain ! After that we talked about the 8 Millennium Goals, which then led us on to imagining we were Gordon Brown (British Prime Minister) and Ban Ki-Moon (Secretary General of the United Nations). We had to think about the challenges and what we would do about all the things going on in the world that aren’t right.  Finally we had nine cards with different ways to tell people in school about the goals. We had to put them in order of what we would do to get the message across.

We hope to be able to make a video presentation about fighting diseases such as malaria.
